How Girl Move Academy is Empowering Mozambican Women
Girl Move Academy is making significant strides in empowering Mozambican women through innovative education and leadership programs. This Mozambican leadership academy was recently recognized by UNESCO as the best education program for girls and women. Their unique intergenerational circular mentoring model has had a transformative impact.
Their Programs:
For Graduated Women with Changemaker Attitude:
This program activates women Changemakers, amplifies their leadership skills, and prepares them to design impact-driven careers. After completing this program, over 80% of their Girl MOVERS achieve impactful employment within three months.
For University Women:
This program supports university students at a decisive stage in their lives, helping them embrace new challenges. An impressive 90% of participants progress in their studies or graduate with a defined life and professional plan.
For Girls of the 7th Grade (MWARUSIS):
This program promotes the progression to secondary school for Mwarusi Girls by inspiring them to believe in the power of their dreams. The transition rate from primary to secondary school is 88%, compared to the national average of 30%.
Circles of Mentorship & Sisterhood:
Girl Move Academy’s programs are intertwined with a unique approach to mentorship that fosters trust and inspiration among teenage girls, university students, and Girl MOVERS. This creates micro teams of Changemakers who generate systematic change within their communities. Together, these women form a Sisterhood that empowers each other to make a difference, first in Mozambique and then globally.

- Exchange Family: Experience a cultural exchange with a Girl MOVER. Share conversations, routines, ideas, and beliefs with a real Changemaker. (October and November)
- Intercultural Buddy: If you’re Portuguese, connect with a Girl MOVER and support her through this transformative process. Build a multicultural friendship and feel the impact of this unique experience. (October and November)
- Field Volunteer: Volunteer in Nampula and support the movement by assisting Girl MOVERS, mentors, and Mwarusis. Help execute projects at the Girl Move Academy in Mozambique. (3 or 6 months, living and travel costs not covered)
- Expert Volunteer: Share your expertise with these girls. They have much to learn from you, and you will learn from them too. Accept the challenge and contribute to their growth.
