Nomads & Pirates is powered by Ana and Lígia, a dynamic duo deeply invested in the promotion of remote work freedom. As founders, we bring our experience and insight into remote work, combined with a profound commitment to purposeful and impactful endeavors, sustainability, and creating a lasting positive change.
The name “Nomads & Pirates” embodies the adventurous spirit of remote work and challenges conventional perceptions. While “Nomads” represents the roaming nature of digital nomads, “Pirates” adds a rebellious yet positive twist, symbolizing a bold approach to exploring new territories and opportunities. By embracing the pirate ethos, we aim to redefine remote work as an empowering journey filled with adventure, community, and purpose, countering negative stereotypes and fostering positive connections wherever we go.

Who we are
With nearly a decade of experience in IT as a trainer, software tester, and project manager, Ana Milhazes is also a sociologist, life coach, activist, yoga instructor, and the author of the blog “Ana, Go Slowly” and the book “Vida Lixo Zero (Zero Waste Life).” She founded the Zero Waste Portugal movement and is dedicated to inspiring change towards a simpler, more sustainable, and happier life. Ana has conducted hundreds of workshops and lectures in schools, companies, and various events, passionately advocating for sustainability, minimalism, and conscious living. As co-founder of Nomads & Pirates, Ana leverages her expertise in IT, sustainability, and life coaching to empower individuals to navigate purposeful careers while embracing the spirit of adventure.
With a global perspective shaped by visits to more than 70 countries and a background in pharmaceutical sciences, anthropology, and international development, Lígia is a true citizen of the world. As one of the founders of Peggada, a discovery platform for sustainable and social impact projects, she is deeply committed to fostering positive change. Lígia’s belief in the power of interdisciplinary learning to drive creativity and innovation fuels her diverse career. Her work with the World Food Programme (United Nations) reflects her dedication to humanitarian efforts, while her master’s thesis on “Digital Nomad Nation” underscores her passion for redefining the balance between work and leisure. As the General Manager of Remote Year in Portugal from 2016 to 2019, Lígia supported and welcomed digital nomads, enhancing their experiences and fostering a vibrant community. Join her journey towards a more inclusive, sustainable, and adventurous world, advocating for human, animal, and environmental rights.
Our Story
Nomads & Pirates was conceived from Ana’s and Lígia’s mutual passion for remote work and their ambition to establish a haven where individuals are inspired to navigate towards impact-driven work, regardless of their global location. Leveraging our firsthand experiences in the realm of remote work, we embarked on creating a platform that not only offers invaluable resources and remote work opportunities but also fosters a supportive network to mentor and motivate each other throughout this voyage.
Nomads & Pirates was born from our shared passion for travel, remote work, and the desire to create a supportive community for fellow digital nomads. We met during a remote work retreat and quickly realized the power of combining our expertise and experiences. Our goal is to inspire and support others on their own journeys, whether they are just starting out or are seasoned digital nomads.
